Benson – senior

Hello! I’m Benson. I’m a 10 year old Greyhound with a brindle coat and toothless grin. My foster parents think I am a handsome gentleman with a beautiful and kind nature.

I’m an older boy who enjoys the simpler things in life. My ideal day is waking up to a yummy breakfast, going out for a little walk, grabbing a “puppaccino” then coming home to cuddle up in bed with the humans.

As I only have 4 teeth left, I am only allowed soft foods.I have quite the appetite and am known to steal your food if you’re not looking. I’m not food aggressive but I don’t understand why other dogs might not like me sharing their food.

I am great on walks but can get very excited if I see any small or fluffy animals, so I am not suited for a home with cats, pocket pets or small dogs. I share the house with another Greyhound who I get along with so I would be happy to share my new family with a medium to large dog.

I am very well behaved in the car. After a few sniffs out the window I prefer to lay down in the back seat until we reach our destination.

I have been learning how to be toilet trained and will wait at the back door for the humans to let me outside and do my business.

I am a very sensitive boy and will cry if I don’t get my nightly cuddles. I like to lay my head on your chest or lap and snuggle into you.

I also like to be able to see my humans when I go to sleep so I need to go to a family who will let me sleep inside. I currently sleep on a dog bed in the lounge room.

I can get cold at night and will need a jumper to keep me warm while I sleep.

I don’t really care for toys and don’t understand how play time works. I haven’t had much experience with little kids but seem to be fine with them when they come up to pat me on my walks.

I am very people orientated and don’t like being left alone for long periods of time. I am currently only left alone a few hours a week (with the company of another Greyhound) and I like to follow my humans wherever they go; even if it's just around the house.

I would suit an older or quieter family who will let me join them on most of their outings and give me lots of love and attention when they get home.

Adoption process

The first step is to look at the profiles of our available dogs and find one or more that you might want to adopt.

Fill out our online Adoption Questionnaire: https://tinyurl.com/drnadopt. You only need to fill it out once and you can list the names of multiple dogs that you would like to inquire about. If there is a phone number listed in the dog’s profile then you can also phone for more information.

Arrange to meet the pet, usually near the foster carer’s home.

If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you’ve selected. (Sometimes we’ll do the property check before you meet the pet).

If both sides agree, then you can adopt your new family member! When you pick up your new pet, you will be asked to:
- sign our Adoption Agreement,
- sign a NSW Companion Animals Register-Change of Owner/Details form, and
- pay the Adoption Fee by bank cheque or direct debit to Newcastle Permanent BSB: 650 000 Account: 503087208. Sorry, no personal cheques. *If paying by direct debit include the name of the pet and your surname as a comment. Make the transfer at least 24 hours before picking up your pet so we can confirm receipt. Also, please print a receipt and bring it with you.

No cash payments will be taken at any point. If you have to pay by cash please visit a local Newcastle permanent branch and directly deposit into our account. Please bring the receipt when you come to pick up your new family member. (No Receipt No Handover)

This is just a guide. Special arrangements and variations to the procedure are made when you live outside the Newcastle/Lake Macquarie area. Most of our pets are available for interstate adoption. Please contact us about this procedure.
