Ernie

"Gentle and cuddly" - Ernie is an incredibly loving boy who just adores every person he meets. Whilst he has learnt a few things in his foster home, like how to go upstairs, sleep by himself and not to go on the couch, Ernie hasn’t learnt how big and long he is, or how much room he takes up.

Ernie has lots of energy for walks and isn’t afraid to let you know when he thinks it’s time to go. He enjoys longer walks in the morning and afternoon (around 40 minutes each) and a quick walk to knock him out at bedtime.

At roughly 40kg, Ernie can be quite pushy and enthusiastic when it is walk time. Whilst he is usually quite gentle, he will need a forever human who can confidently hold his lead. Ernie is quite vocal for a greyhound, and uses his voice to let you know he’s hungry or needs a walk. When he wants your attention, his awareness of personal space also goes out the window.

Ernie is still learning kitchen boundaries and how to stay out of the way when his humans are cooking. He will need a forever home that is vigilant with not leaving food within his reach and able to resist his begging for human food.

Ernie would enjoy being an only dog. He has not spent much more than 2 hours alone, and whilst he paced and whined for a little bit, he eventually went to lay on his bed and snooze.

Other dogs can be a bit overwhelming for him, and he is still learning how to react to them on walks, as he will growl or whine, particularly when the other dog is very excited to see him. Ernie is definitely not a fan of cats, so no cat or small dog applications please.

Adoption process

Dogs are pack animals and Greyhounds, in particular, are very familiar with being surrounded by other dogs in their racing kennel environment. For this reason, when left alone without people or other dogs for company, they can be prone to separation anxiety which can manifest in destructive and/or noisy behaviour. Yes, they may "grow out" of it after a few weeks in their new home, but why put the dog through that stress to ultimately live all day alone, while everyone is at work? As a result we do not rehome dogs into households where they are left on their own for more than 4 hours per day, without either people or another dog for company.

Your home will require an initial “dog safe” Homecheck by Gumtree Greys. Payment of $350 for the placement is required at the time of the dog going into your home for the two week trial period. If you decide during the trial not to proceed with adopting the greyhound, your adoption fee will be reimbursed.

Outside of the trial period, the adoption fee will be relinquished to Gumtree Greys.
